Coumadin and Alcohol

by carp999, Mar 13, 2008 08:02PM
Hi,

I have read quite a bit about using alcohol while being treated with coumadin.  Consensus says best case scenario is to abstain.  I have for almost three months.  Consensus also says that one or two drinks per day is safe but, 3 or more can cause your blood to become to thin and your IPNR will shoot up to dangerous levels, and chronic heavy drinking can make your readings lowered.  They also mention that if I get drunk I could fall and bleed to death.

Right now I take 7.5 mg each day except friday, sat, and sunday i take 5mg.  My last reading a few days ago was 2.6.

I don't want to drink everyday.  I'd like to be able to binge drink once or maybe 2 times in a bad week but, not every week.  If I knew that I was going to drink a lot Friday and Saturday would it be safer to take a lower dose coumidan thurs and friday or skip friday to prevent over thinning?  If you knew a person was  going to drink to excess is skipping the dose for that day safer for me than taking the normal dose and drinking alot?

Thanks,
Ted

If you are asking advice to justify going on a binge, it is not likely you will get it here.  We are interested in helping people with heart health issues, not harming them.
If the stress of being sober is piling up on you, one way to get help with that stress is AA.   In the best interests of your good health, I wish you good luck and good decision making.
