Coumadin and internal bleeding

by Babbine, Nov 02, 2009 11:57AM
I am on 2.5 of coumadin daily and was given the ok to proceed with fish oil, also.  I was taking about 2.4 grams daily.  Suddenly, I began to bleed when using the bathroom.  Several episodes of significant bleeding occurred and my hemaglobin dropped to 7.6.  I then had 2 transfusions followed by endoscopy and colonoscopy.   Nothing was seen on these exams which was both very good news and disappointing.  I'm now scheduled to have the "camera pill" to investigate the small intestine.

My question:  would the coumadin and fish oil combined be the cause of this bleeding and can fish oil alone sustain my need to thin my blood for arrythmia?  I am afraid to take the coumadin again.  I've been off that and the fish oil since Oct. 17.

These drugs are only a problem with bleeding if you cut yourself or in your case have something internal that is bleeding.  I would continue with whatever the doctor said is okay to take.  Did your doctor take you off the Coumadin?  I hope you didn't do this on your own.  I think the rectal bleeding is just a coincidence, and not related in any way to your medication.  Your doctor may have stopped it due to whatever is bleeding internally will bleed easier and more with Coumadin.
