Coumadin medication

by Brenda Fowler, Nov 22, 1999 12:00AM
My husband is currently takin 5mg of coumadin for the past 5 months.  At his last protime check they called and said they needed to increase the amount.  At the time he had just started taking Celebrex for another problem.  And he had a cold and had taken a nightime cold medication.  Would either meds. effect the coumadin?  He is now taking 6mg and will again have this checked soon.

Are there many medications that would effect this blood thinner?  What types would they be?

Many medications as well as dietaary changes may effect the potency of coumadin.  The most common are medications for ulcer.  I have not heard that celebrex would cause this.

You may refer to the package insert for coumadin and there will be a complete listing of all poteential side effects of this medication.

I have a condition that I am not sure about long term prognossis. I too take coumadin on a daily basis, my symtoms started out as vertigo then worsened with each attack. I went to 4 doctors before the 5th one, a Nuerologist ran some genetic testing and determined i have a condition that makes my blood clot too soon inside my body.... I can not remember name of disorder but it is something that i have tremendous headaches with . I have to keep my blood level at 3.2 in order to prevent clots. My question is do you  know of any blood disorder that has these symptoms....which are: headache, dizziness, blood pressure rises and drops many times during the day during an episode. I am currently taking 4ml of coumadin, diazide for water retention, and potassium to work with the diazide. I have had ears checked and there is nothing to suggest i have an ear problem. I have tried to get info on this but since i can not remember name of diagnosis i can not seem to find anything, ido know it is something like cardio.... something. I am sorry i can not give you exact name but was hoping you could give me any info on blood disorders with these symptoms.
               sincerely, Kim Lovellette

Dear kim,

I am not certain what this may be.  Please check with a hematology site for more information.
