Dental Health and Heart Disease

Hello everybody,

I read a post by Ed which mentioned something about his tooth decay and heart medication. That got me thinking because of late ( well soon after my Heart Attack )  I have been having all sort of dental problems.

Post MI my gums bleed ( the sink looks like a bloodbath! ) but more then that I have had two fillings, one cap and at least five visits to my dentist all in space of six months. Before this I only went to see the dentist once and that was when I was in Sixth Form in early 1980s. I was fastidous with oral hygiene and that saw me through the decades without any problems.

Even after all the visits to the dentist things are still  not quite right, couple of my teeth are very sensitive ( all of sudden ) and I could swear my gumline is receding at a alarming rate.

I am on Aspirin, Clopidregel, Bisoprolol, Ramipril, Ormocor and 80mg Atrovostatin  -  Had my time 'arrived' with dental problems or is there some link with the medication and or Heart Disease.  How many others have had this problem?

Quite a number of heart medications can cause dry mouth, which in turn can cause gum problems. I had a problem with calcium channel blockers, which is a known rare side effect. If your mouth is dry a lot more often than it used to be, you should drink more fluids and you could try chewing sugar free gum to entice the production of saliva.
If your mouth is always dry, you should bring this to the attention of your Doctor also.

As far as I know Q10 is given as treatment for gum problems. Atorvastatin inhibits natural production of Q10 therefore I think that it can be link there.... you can give a try to Q10.

In the other hand, statin have a bactericide effect, that I really enjoy because I no longer has pain in my teeth
