Dialated Heart medicines prescriptions

Dear Sir/Madam,

I would like to know the role of the following medicines which are prescribed by the Honorable Dr. for my Dad after consulting with him. My dad (60 yrs old) is suffering from some heart disease (to my understanding dilated heart). My query is that:-

1. Are the medicines to be continued till his life ?
2. Wat precautions are to be taken by him ?
3. Is it fatal ?
4. Is there any kind of operations availalble ?
5. Is this a permanent illness ?

Tab. Lanoxin 0.25 (dose: daily but omit on Sat/Sun)
Tab. Aldactone 25 (dose: 1 morning...1 evening)
Tab. Cardevas 6.25 (dose: morning 8am)
Tab. Losar 50 (dose: morning 8am)
Tab. Ramace 2.5 (dose: morning 8pm)
Tab. Flavedon MR (dose: 1 morning...1 evening)
Tab. Selace Forte (dose: 1 daily)
Tab. Folvite (dose: 1 daily)
Tab. Neurobion 2 (dose: 1 daily)

I would like to say sorry for giving partial details only. I'll gather soon all the reports and submit for your kind perusal. May be the medicine prescriptions detailed would help you to understand the symptoms that made the Dr. to prescribe.

thanks for the post.

Some of the medicines you posted are the european trade names and Im not familiar with them all. We do have definite evidence that several medicines have a positive effect in patients with heart failure and cardiomyopathy. These medicines help with the remodeling of the heart and also to modulate the hormonal imbalance that occurs in patients with heart failure leading to water imbalance and increased symptoms.

1. Are the medicines to be continued till his life?

Generally yes.  In some patients with reversible causes of cardiomyopathy, medicines can be removed. This is a small percentage however and most patients continue medications indefinitely.

2. Wat precautions are to be taken by him?

I do not know his full history so it's impossible to answer.  Compliance with medical regimens and fluid/salt restrictions are very important.

3. Is it fatal?

Patients with cardiomyopathies with heart failure symptoms have an increase risk of mortality.  Proper medical regimens do have a positive impact on mortality.

4. Is there any kind of operations availalble?

It would depend on the cause. Ischemia (coronary blockages) would have to be ruled out and remedied. There are also other therapies such as biventricular pacing and AICD implantation in patients with severe symptoms. These are patient specific should be discussed with your physician.

5. Is this a permanent illness ?

Most likely yes.

Hi Rajeshkumar,

I am no professional but looking at the names of the medications, my guess is your dad is in India.
My mom who is only 51 has been suffering from Dilated Cardiomyopathy for a long time. She was diagnosed abt 2 yrs back and takes similar medications. If you are in India, I will highly recommend 'Asian Heart Institute' in Bombay for good heart care and help in diagnosing what your dad has.
