Different Diagnoses

Hello...In 1984 I was diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse.  I had an echo probably 10 years later to confirm that.  In 2003 I had another echo confirming that.  In 2008 I had an echo diagnosing that I did not have mitral valve prolapse.  I am waiting for another echo, but it is through the County, and may be a long wait.  How can I all of a sudden not have mitral valve prolapse???

I don't believe a mitral valve prolapse can be healed without intervention.  It almost always is congenital and a structual anomoly.  The leaflets of the valve do not properly close  the valve opening and during the heart's pumping phase, the pressure within the pumping chamber "bellows" the leaflet into the atruim (upper chamber), and blood backflows.  The cords that attach to the leaflet can be elongated. Almost always the leakage is mild and no progression.

There may be an error with one or more of the tests.  There could be some calification of the valve opening, and that abnormally causes a narrowing of the opening and no blood flows back into the atrium.  Regardless there shouldn't be any concern.
