Digoxin side effects

Hi.

The new-born niece of a friend of mine has begun life with a number of troubles (she had to have multiple operations on her stomach/bowels).  Her mother now has to give her digoxin daily.
However, her parents believe that the medicine is causing some side effects for her, as she has taken to screaming (especially at night).
What are the side effects for a newborn baby taking digoxin and can you offer any suggestions for relief??
Thanks for taking the time to read/reply.

Rachel

My 6 yr. old son began taking digoxin for SVT (.125 mg twice a day)last year.  He was on it for about 6 months.  Over this time period he woke up several nights having to throw up.  Different from a stomach virus, because it would take about an hour of discomfort before he would get sick, then he would go to sleep and wake up fine.

He stopped taking digoxin (because he was rediagnosed as having ectopic atrial tachycardia and digoxin was not relieving palpitations completely) and now takes flecainide and atenolol.  He tolerates these drugs very well and has not been sick once in one year.

Dear rach,
This is not listed as a potential side-effect in the package insert and I have never seen this effect in adults.  I would however recommend they mention it to her pediatric cardiologist at the next visit.
