Dilated atrium and atrial flutter

by Victric, Jun 10, 2007 12:00AM
Hi!

I was recently admitted to the ER for atrial flutter/EAT. (They haven't decided which one yet) Seems a bit strange to me, since I'm only 26. I have a few questions regarding this:

1. They did an echo which showed a "bordeline dilated left atrium". Otherwise, the echo seemed normal. The echo said:

LVEDd: 57 mm
LVESd: 36 mm
LA dimension: 34 mm
LAs: 43 mm

EF > 60 %

As far as I know, my LA dimension is within the normal limits (<40mm) but what is LAs? What could cause the dilation if my heart otherwise seems healthy?

2. As seen from above, my heart seemed kind of large. Is that normal for a tall guy who's quite fit? Could dilated Cardiomyopathy be ruled out due to the normal EF, or should I have another Echo?

3. My ECG at arrival showed Left Axis Deviation, which I do not have while in sinus rythm. Is this anything to be concerened about?

Appreciate any help!

Victric,

Thanks for the post.

1. They did an echo which showed a 'bordeline dilated left atrium'. Otherwise, the echo seemed normal. The echo said: LVEDd: 57 mm LVESd: 36 mm LA dimension: 34 mm LAs: 43 mm EF > 60 % As far as I know, my LA dimension is within the normal limits (<40mm) but what is LAs? Evcerything in normal physiology is on a bell curve. It's possible that you are just on the larger size of normal since it is borderline. If the rest of your echo was normal, this is very likely the case.  It is possible if you are having excessive atrial arrythmias that this could evetually lead to dilation, but it is less likely from what you post.

2. As seen from above, my heart seemed kind of large. Is that normal for a tall guy who's quite fit? Could dilated Cardiomyopathy be ruled out due to the normal EF, or should I have another Echo?

Yes as I mentioned above it certainly could be from your size. Another echo will not add any additional information.

3. My ECG at arrival showed Left Axis Deviation, which I do not have while in sinus rythm. Is this anything to be concerened about?

Not with your echo findings.

good luck
