Dilated mid ascending aorta

Dilated mid ascending aorta

Male 30yrs old, non smoker. 4 months ago I was experiencing discomfort/pressure in my heart area which was lasting for increasingly longer spells(3 days at end).I had a history from when I was a child of a coarctation on the pulmonary artery so I was anxious to check out. After Echo & MRI, it showed a biscupid aortic valve which seems to be operating fine, but aortic dimensions of 4.5 at sinuses, 3.7 at sinotubular junction increasing to 5.1 in the mid ascending aorta. Also slight coarctation as mentioned of a minimum diameter of 1.9. I work in a stressful job and have still not gone back to work yet because of this. The pressured discomfort was relieved when I took time off work, but now it is replaced by often a sudden slight darting pain and discomfort. My consultant is happy that the dilation hasn't increased any further than 5.1 and wishes to monitor again in 4 months, he also feels that the pains are not related to the condition. I would like to go back to work but am anxious stress could worsen the condition.
Should I be worried? I accept pains of rupture or dissection would be more severe but what are the pains I am experiencing? Are they related - I never had them before. Can I lead a normal life after surgery?

I'm sorry to hear you're having some difficulty.  Your pains don't sound like they are related to your aortic dilation.  The dilation of your aorta as well as your bicuspid aortic valve should be followed closely with serial imaging by your cardiologist.  If they continue to worsen they may become surgical problems.  If you need surgery, it is often open heart surgery that requires opening of the chest via sternotomy.  Although this is an extensive surgery, recovery to a normal life is certainly the expectation.  If all goes well it should not change your quality of life.

Best of luck.
