Diverticulum

I just had a heart cath done on the right and left side of my heart.  My doctor discoverd a small diverticulum on the left ventricle. (I also have a bicuspid aortic valve)  He said it is very rare and that he has only seen two of them in his 17 years in cardiology.  He said I do not need to do anything about it right now.  If he has only seen two of them how do I know it is something that can be left alone?  Looking at info online it does not sound like something that can be ignored.

LV diverticula are extremely rare and most cardiologist don't get to see them.  We know about them however from reports that are published on pubmed.com.  We know that they are congenital and associated with bicuspid AV.  The are asymptomatic majority of the time.  Very rarely they may be associated with valvular regurgitation, clot formation, ventricular arrhythmia, or even ventricular rupture and sudden cardiac death.  Again, especially, the last two, are extremely rare.  Only sympomatic patients warrant surgical correction, ie if you had arrhythmia or clots, etc.  If your bicuspid valve degenerates in the future and you will reguire surgery, consideration may be given to fixing the diverticulum at that time.

My doctor has told me I have arrhythmia.  In fact I am on a 30 day monitor right now.  I have very strong palpatations and a lot of time it feels like someone is squeezing my heart and zapping the breath out of me...So do you think I should be concerned?

Depending on where the arrhythmia is coming from.  If it's an atrial arrhythmia, I wouldn't worry.  Ventricular arrhytmia would be more concerning, especially if it were coming from an area near the diverticulum.  Your cardiologist should be able to comment on that.  Otherwise, you may need to see a cardiac electrophysiologist.
