Does Normal Exercise Stress ECHO Mean All's OK with My Heart?

I had an exercise stress echocardiogram done a month ago because of shortness of breath when climbing stairs, dizziness/lightheadedness and extreme exhaustion 24/7. My GP said my test came back normal but indicated "exercise intolerance." He said I need to exercise more.

My question: Does these normal results indicate all is ok with my heart, or are there other heart-related problems that would not show up on this test? I am 53, and my mother had these same symptoms, needed a triple bypass and died of heart disease. So I am still concerned, and my symptoms persist.

Are you short of breath when doing other daily activities that you could do before without being short of breath?  Climbing stairs could just be an out of shape response to the shortness of breath or allergies (if you have any).  Have you noticed that you are sleeping more and taking naps during the daytime?  The only true test that I know of to really find out if there is any blockage in your heart is an angiogram.  If your symptoms continue you may want to consider having one.  If the stress test said exercise intolerance, there must be something that was seen and the diagnosis was what they thought due to lack of exercise.  This may be true or not true.  Look for signs of swelling in legs and ankles, shortness of breath, swollen abdomen.  Shortness of breath is usually a sign of heart valves, chest pains is usually a sign of plugged arteries.  Some people especially women can have only the shortness of breath when the arteries are plugged.  If you have a family history of heart disease, you will need to be monitored closely by your doctor.  Here is a website of one of the best hospitals in Minnesota which explains the blood work for heart disease screening:  http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/heart-disease/HB00016
