Drug therapy for Afib with Hx asthma

by Les__0, Oct 14, 1998 12:00AM

  Dear Doctor,
I am interested in the current (especially) drug and treatment modalities for increasing frequencies of atrial fib in a 62yr male with long standing hx of asthma and  normal cardiovascular and normal echo.  Can you also provide the email address for Dr. Chung at the Atrial Fibrillation Clinic?
  Thank you very much,
  Les

Dear Les, thank you for your question.  Since you have asthma, medications called beta blockers should be avoided so your heart rate can be controlled with calcium channel blockers like cardizem. To try to keep you in sinus rhythm chronically, medications that could be used are flecainide and amiodarone.  Since it sounds like you have intermittent/paroxsymal atrial fibrillation, electrical cardioversion probably won't help since it's used only for patients with chronic atrial fib.  Additionally, you should be on coumadin to thin your blood and to prevent you from forming clots in your heart while you're in atrial fib.  Dr. Chung would be an excellent cardiologist to see about your atrial fib.  I don't know her email address, but to contact her, please follow the directions below on how to use the Cleveland Clinic Heart Center website.
Good luck!
