EKG technician said I have a large right atrium

by unigruni, Apr 04, 2007 12:00AM
I am having a biopsy on Friday of a small area in my breast and in my pre-surgery workup they did an EKG on me. I've never had an EKG before and the technician said, "Did you know you have a large right atrium?" I said, "No, what does that mean?" And she said, "Do you exercise?" I told her, yes, moderately and I lead a very active life with three kids, a dog and special education teacher with special needs kids, so I stay very active most of the day. My weight is within normal limits, blood pressure is normal, she said EKG was otherwise normal. On top of worrying about breast cancer, should I add this as well? Thanks for any insights.

Hello,
Sorry that happened to you.  EKG is not a very sensitive way to evaluate the right atrial chamber size.  If your exam is otherwise normal and you don't have symptoms, I would not worry about that.  When you see your doctor, ask them about it.  I hope everything goes well with your biopsy.

thanks for posting.
