ER for heart rate-questions

by alish2006, May 07, 2006 12:00AM
Hello again,

(Graves/Hyper)- untreated yet

Friday evening I was feeling terrible, joint pain every time I moved. When i went to bed my whole body was shaking from head to toe.  Even after 2 hours in bed, my heart was racing bad.

Went to the ER and they said my heart rate was 150 and put a lead in (?don't know what they call the thing that goes into your arm)  and gave me 1gram of Inderal.    They did 3 EKGs and my heart rate came down to 90-100 bpm.  They let me go after 10 hours. (funny they told me twice I was staying for a few days)  I have to take 10mgs of Inderal twice a day and Xanax 0.25 for the shakes.  All of this is caused by the Hyperthyroid.

I was told to take an extra 10mgs of Inderal if heart rate goes
towards 120.  My questions are;

1. Is the heart rate staying at 90-100 when resting ok?

2. What is a normal heart rate, resting and moving?

Thank you Everyone!

Alsih,

Sorry to hear of our troubles.

1. Is the heart rate staying at 90-100 when resting ok?

If your elevated heart rate is due to hyperthyroidism, the inderal is only a temporary fix. Once your thyroid is treated, your heart rate will come down on its own. For now 90-100 is fine.

2. What is a normal heart rate, resting and moving?

There really is no normal rate, it is largely person and conditioning dependant. Generally, we say a heart rate between 60-100 lies in the normal range.

good luck

HI,

I too have Graves disease with hyperthyroidism. Did the E.R. personnel mention seeing an Endocrinologist for Graves?  It is certainly o.k. and recommended to take a beta blocker for fast heart rate with hyperthyroid, but you will need proper treatment for the thyroid.  Once you are treated for thyroid, your heart related symptoms will probably improve and you may be able to come off of the beta blocker.  A "normal" resting heart rate is 60-100bpm.  So I've been told by my docs.

Hi, I take Inderal 10 mg twice a day for PVCs and tachy. I have Hashimoto's but my thyroid values are still within the range. The thyroid might be causing my heart problems though.
20 mg Inderal is a very low dose. Some people take up to 120, as I've read on this board. My cardio said that when symptoms get bad I can take as much as 60 mg a day. So if your doctor prescribed 20 mg Inderal a day for you, just don't feel in a hurry about wanting to come off the med,as betablockers are safe even in the long term.

Alish, why is your hyperthyroidism untreated right now?  Is it that you have just been diagnosed?

I agree with duchess:  The thyroid condition must be treated, because it's affecting your whole body.  Bringing the heart rate down with Inderal should only be a temporary measure.

I would think try and get treatment for your hyper thyroid, then maybe your palpitations would be less or subside, only my personal opinion, I am not a doctor, just my humble opinion.

Thank you all for the helpful comments.  It makes me feel more at ease taking the beta blocker, as I am one who never took any medication.

I was only diagnosed with Graves/Hyper about 2 weeks ago.  My GP sent me to an endocrinologist who advised me to have surgery immediately. He disagreed with any type of medicine for Hyper.  I decided to seek out another Dr. and have been unable to get an appointment, but finally got one for the 15th.    I am taking Flax Seed Oil, Omega 3 and B-Complex for now, along with the Inderal and Xanax.  The Xanax does seem to stop the shaking a bit, and the Inderal is keeping the heart rate 95-107.

Thank you again, and I will post again with updates.

Since you were just diagnosed you might want to check out the Thyroid forum.  That forum is similiar to this but deals with thyroid problems.  I was diagnosed hyper over 25 years ago.  They can get it under control but it may take awhile.  It is not always an easy road.  I still monitor my pulse even though I have been pretty stable for over 20 years, just a habit I got into when they were trying to bring my thyroid down (it took 2 years to bring it down to "normal")  Good luck and just "hang in there baby".

Thank you very much.   Today, my Dr. upped the Inderal to 10mgs 3 times a day and Xanax .25mgs 3 times a day.   Told me to take another Inderal if the heart rate hits 110 resting.   This is all so scary for me, especially the eyes bulging, but hopefully after seeing another endo next week, we will get on the right road.

If it wasn't for the support and information on the internet, I would be lost.    I did post today on the Thyroid board re: vitamins and amounts to take.

Again, thank you for the encouragement.

I am reading about this and the hyperthyroidism and I don't really understand. I have always been told that my thyroid is small and would be hypo instead of hyper. My pulse got up to 180 and I went to the Emergency room and it was down to about 140 but it would go from 140 down to 90 back up to 130 and then down to 80. It was all over the place and they said that I would have to worry about blood clots because of it being so irregular. It just flutters and goes up and down all the time. The only time it hurts is when my pulse gets 80 or below. I am totally confused and scared. I really don't know what is going on. I have to have the holter put on next week, but I am not sure that I will understand any better after that. I am 35 and really confused. I am glad I found this forum. I hope someone else can write some things on here that may help me to understand better. Thanks
