Echo Cardiogram Results

Would you please explain just what these results mean?

1 All 4 valves were visualized and appear to be normal except for the aortic valve which was calcified.
2 The 4 chambers were normal in size, except for the left atrium and left ventricle which were borderline dilated. TThe left ventricle showed normal wall thickness with global hypokinesis and ejection fraction around 35-40%.
3 Color doppler showed trivial mitral and mild tricuspid regurgitation. The velocity across the aortic valve was normal measuring 1.1m/sec. The estimated right ventricular systolic pressure is around 30-mm of mercury.

Your valves are not a problem, and some calification is usually part of the aging process.  Trivial and mild regurgitation is not considered significant.

Borderline dilated LA and LV may be an indication or it is an indication the cardiac output is reduced (35-40% EF) and the LV dilates to compensate for the low CO.

Hypokinesis is an impairment of the heart muscle wall and global means not isolated to a specific area of the heart wall in question.  Hypokinesis can be the result of ischemia (lack of blood to the area in question) from blocked or partially blocked vessels or a heart attack.

The impairment is not severe but it does compromise the cardiac output.  For a perspective EF below 29% is considered heart failure, and normal is 50 to 75%.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I really appreciated your comments. Now may I  make one further request. My wife ( Shirley ) is also 80 and we would your comments on her most recent Echo cardiogram.

1 The 4 valves were visualized and appeared to be grossly normal. The tricuspid valve showed mild sclerosis.
2 The right atrium and left atrium were dilated. The left ventricle showed mild concentric hypertrophy   with mild global hypokinesis and an ejection fraction 45 %.
3 Color doppler showed trivial mitral and mild to moderate tricuspid regurgitation. The estimated RVSP is 32 mm HG. There is mild aortic insufficiency.

Thank you again.

Noland and Shirley
