Echo interpretation

by hankstar, Jan 16, 2002 12:00AM

Dear Doctor,

Thanks once again for taking my question, I just received a
copy of my echo taken in January of last year , I live overseas
and I will not be seeing the cardiologist where I live for another 2 months. I want to avoid having another echo because where I live echos cost over u.s$ 1250.00.

THe measurement is as follows:

ivstd 12.1mm       edv 93.9ml
                   esv 23.9ml ,sv 70.0 ml ,co 5.11 L ,ef 0.75
lvidd 45.3mm       fs 0.43
lvpwd 9.2mm        si 34.8
ivsts 17.3mm       ci 2.54
lvids 25.7mm       mvcf 1.38
lvpws 15.0mm
et 312 ms
hr 73

ivstd 10.7mm     edv 83.1ml
lvidd 43.0mm     esv 30.3ml
lvpwd 10.1mm     sv 52.8ml
ivsts 15.3mm     co 4.07 L
lvids 28.3mm     ef 0.64
lvpws 14.4mm     fs .34
et 304           si 26.3
                 ci 2.02
hr 77            mvcf 1.12

These are two different measurements taken off of the same echo,
as I said before I was diagnosed with marginal concentric left
venticular hypertrophy.
My question is does these measurements confirm that finding and
do you think I should have an repeat echo done now or should i wait another year.

Some ECGs I have suggest LVH others DO NOT. I am still confused!

Thanks for taking my question in such detail.

   Best Regards,
      Hank.

Dear hank,
Where do you live?  I didn't know it was outside the US.  Remember that echo is a 2 dimensional image of a 3 dimensional object.  Therefore the different measurements reflect different "cuts" of the image plane.  The numbers reflect only very slight increase in the wall thickness.  Normal wall thickness is about 10mm during diastole (rest).  The thickest measurement during diastole in your case is 12mm.  If you were in the US I don't think your doctor would want to repeat an echo any earlier than 1 year.

I have been trying to post a similar question for the past month but I have been able to do so since the "daily number of questions" allowed seems always to be reached before I get to it.  How do you post a question into this forum?  Pls advice. thanks, paola
