Echocardiogram - Palpitations

Echocardiogram - Palpitations

I was reading over my echocardiogram & some of the numeric findings & comments were: Diastolic diameter size was 4.4, systolic diameter 3.0, aortic root 2.6, EF 60-65%.....Some of the comments were: the mitral valve is normal, no pericardial effucsion is seen, & normal left ventricular size & function...

1. Is there any one thing a cardilogist looks for in an echo?...I mean, is EF the most important thing, is it the function of the left ventricle?, is it the diastolic size?, etc...Just curious as to what is the most signifcant things a MD looks for on echos....

2. W/regards to palpitations, can one experience palpitations and still be in a normal sinus rhythm?....On an event or Holter monitor what does palpitations look like when they are insignificant (benign) or a more serious/life-threatening nature?....

1. You should as the reading cardiolgoist. One usually taylors the read of an echocardiogram to the specific complain of the patient either CHF, palpitations, or chest pain.
2. Yes, they are called PACs or sinus tachycardia. This is not usually life threatening, unless it is associated with other systemic problems ( bleeding, pneumonia, Pulmonary embolus).
