Elevated tryglycerides

Elevated tryglycerides

Hi CC Doctor.  My husband had his lipids taken  with a good lab.  It came back Cholesterol 213 but the Tryglycerides were over 700.  They told him to walk and cut down the sugars.    Is this all he has to do and is this number (714) indicative of something else going on in his body that needs attention?  .He did not fast for this test.  Taken after a big lunch.  Thank You.    Mary

Dear Mary:
The proper way to measure triglycerides is after an overnight fast.  A meal (especially a heavy one) will increase the triglycerides greatly.  This makes their interpretation much more difficult.  Your husband should have the test repeated after an overnight fast.
Your husband should also have a blood glucose checked in order to screen for diabetes.  This can contribute to elevated triglycerides.  In addition, he should have both the good and bad cholesterol measured, not just the total cholesterol.
Once all this data has been gathered, your husband
