Enlarged Right Atrium

Enlarged Right Atrium

Last evening I was in my ER dept with chest pressure or pains you could say. I, had a EKG performed and a chest x ray but both came back good. No sign of a heart attack, blood clots, or heart damage. But the ER physician did suggest that when they looked over my chest x ray it showed that my right atrium was a bit larger than my left which considered him a little. I, did schedule a cardiac stress test in the next week, But what does a enlarged right atrium mean? I am only 37, don't smoke, not overweight (132 lbs), like everyone else I do occasionally indulge in junk foods. But my grandfather died at 41 of a pulmanary embolism and my mother just had a quad bypass at 60 when she had a small heart attack. I am very concerned please let me know what I should do or what is possibly wrong with me!!!!! Thanx

It is very hard to tell based on an xray that a right atrium is enlarged.  So I would not put too much weight on what was told to you at the ER.  If you are concerned about you could have an echocardiogram.  Isolated RA enlargement is very rare.   RA enlargement is usually caused by severe tricuspid valve regurgitation in isolation or when associated with pulmonary disease.  Again, echocardiography would also help sort that out.  There are also congenital malformation that could lead to RA enlargement, also easily identified on echo.

thank you for your answer. I, have a cardiolite stress test scheduled for this coming week so we will wait and see what that produces. Thank you again.
