Exercising with Aortic Valve Stenosis

by debra, Dec 14, 1999 12:00AM
I am a personal trainer.  A 78 year old woman asked me to take her on as a new client.  She has aortic valve stenosis.  This is a condition I have not dealt with as of yet.  What are her limitations, contraindications etc.  I have looked on the internet but found nothing specific to weight training and aerobic exercise in the structured environment we will be working in.  Thank you for your assistance.

This really depends on how severe the aortic stenosis is. If it is severe, she ought to have surgery to fix it (assuming she is otherwise healthy). If it is moderate, she would be restricted from any heavy exertion. She ought to check with her cardiologist to see just how severe her condition is and also what level of activity is permitted.
