Factor V & MTHFR

I am 31 / F and had a mild MI due to embolis at the age of 28.  (They were never able to explain the reason for the MI, said it might be genetics, and could run tests to find out why but I was so healthy that it shouldn't happen again) There is a family history of early cardiac events.  Recently due to other, non-heart problems, my doctor was conducting blood tests and found the MTHFR mutation and the factor V.  I know that the Factor V is a contribuiting cause to clotting disorders, but I am still confused on how the MTHFR mutation plays in.  Can anyone help?

Thanks jenn

Thanks for your help...

I believe that my homocysteine leves were only slightly elevated.  I was placed on folic acid and had been on a daily baby ASA from the MI.

MTHFR is another clotting disorder like factor V. It is an enzyme that is needed to control hemocysteine (amino acid in the blood...can be influenced by diet). There is a risk for blood clots if there is elevated homocysteine levels.

The individual with MTHFR mutation and normal homocysteine levels is not at an increased risk for clots.  The higher the level above normal the higher the risk of clots.  It is the homocysteine level that is significant and blood tests will help determine the risk.  MTHFR mutation by itself is not a clotting disorder.
