Fear of Stress Test after Bypass Surgery

by Cindy, Aug 09, 2006 12:00AM
Dear Doctor,

One year ago my 81-year-old mother had 4-part bypass surgery.  She has remained active in her tri-level home but is experiencing increasing shortness of breath upon mild exertion.  We return to the cardiologist 8/14 at the request of her family doctor.  Problem is, she is so fearful of having to undergo another traumatic stress test.  Will that procedure be necessary for them to know what’s occurring or are there other telling diagnostics they could do?  I don’t think she will comply if they want her to do a stress test.  What are the chances of her having a heart attack during the test, given her history?

Are there any stress tests that don't require physical exertion?

Thank you.

Hi Cindy,

I can understand your concern. I think human nature allows us to be fearful that there could be something wrong with our health and nothing makes this come more to the forefront than a "test."

An exercise stress test is one of the best means that we have to assess prognosis and is probably the best test for someone having increased shortness of breath after a CABG.  The odds of her having a heart attack during a stress test are very, very low.  If she came to my clinic with similar complaints, I would order an exercise stress test.

I hope this helps.  good luck!

The short answer is yes.  A simple injection is all that is necessary to get the heart to act like it is being worked hard.  A funny taste in one's mouth is the only symptom.  Good luck to Mom, Cindy.

I know the doctor said "exercise test" but please discuss with her cardiologist if something like an Adenoisine Cardiolite Test would be good for her.  She does not have to physically exercise as the Adenoisne injection will act similar.  I have this all the time and so does my hubby and sister.

I too have fear and this is very normal.  God Bless her.

I passed the Cardiolite test with 5 blocked arteries, but I did not pass the stress test.  They pulled me off the stress test.  I also passed the one that you lay down. There  must be a reason the stress test shows more.  I have to have surgery in a couple of weeks, and I know it must be a worry if she is having symptoms.  Let us know how she does.
