Fluctuation in blood pressure

Fluctuation in blood pressure

I have been suffering with migraines for 15 years, but at every physical each year my blood pressure has always been normal (125/78). I go into the doctors two weeks ago to try to get a different medication for my migraines because I have them more often now (3-4 times week). When they checked my bp it was 186/96. So the dr. put me on Inderal (or Propanolol).  1 tablet (80 mg in a.m. and 80 mg tablet at night)... well my bp got too low at 86/55, so I cut the dose in half and it seemed to work for the bp but now the migraines are back. I believe it was helping the migraines at the higher dose but the bp got too low.  So now I'm off the Inderal (just one day so far) and monitoring my bp and go back to the dr. next week.  At around 7 pm. decided to check my bp and it was great -- at 118 over 80, but then at 10:00 I checked it again because I have a headache coming on and I was curious if my bp would be higher.  It was 130/65.  I did take an excedrin for the headache -- could this be why the higher number went up?  So confused... I'm just curious why the higher number would fluctuate so much?  Went from 118 (systolic) to 130 in a couple hours.

I have had these things since I was 17 now I am 50..diagnosed with anti-phospholipid syndrome then complicated migraines. It has no age limit and the frequency has increased with age, no one will insure me because of the high likelihood of stroke. Nothing about this is good.

I don't understand why a doctor would start a patient on blood pressure medication based on ONE higher than normal reading.

I've suffered over 25 years from migraines,...at least 2-3 a month with nausea and the works.  No history of hypertension.... however 2 months ago I got one so severe that I spent the entire night vomiting. When I couldn't stand it anymore, I headed to the hospital ER.  My normally low BP (110/70) had spiked to 185/89.  They informed me it was high, but really didn't make too much of it. They gave me something for the brutal pain in my head and an IV with medication to control the vomiting.  After a few hours, they allowed me to leave as I felt better. When I questioned my blood pressure, the doctor pointed out that it's not unusual for blood pressure to increase when a person is in pain or straining from gastric distress.

I went home, rested a couple hours and took my blood pressure again.... this time it was back down to normal.... 120/80.  No BP meds needed.

Just wondering, could this be an isolated reading which might have been due to pain you were experiencing?
