Fluctuations in blood pressure

by Barbara-From-Huntsvile, Feb 26, 1999 12:00AM

Normal blood pressure is said to be 120/80.  My blood pressure fluctuates
from 123/78 at rest to 170/100 during a routine day.  What are normal
fluctuations of blood pressure during stress, exercise, rest etc?  What
would I quote my blood pressure to be?  (I am 41, female, Insulin Dep
Dependent, moderate weight, take 3 types of blood pressure medication).

Dear Barbara, thank you for your question.  Your blood pressure fluctuations are higher than normal and that probably relates to your underlying problem of hypertension.  Your BP ideally should be below 130/80 except during exercise where it may increase to 160-170.   If your BP is consistently above 140/90, then you may need a different combination of blood pressure medications or higher doses of the medicines you're taking now.
I hope you find this information useful.  Information provided in the heart forum is for general purposes only.  Only your physician can provide specific diagnoses and therapies. Please feel free to write back with additional questions.  Good luck!
