Fluttering...quiet beats

First of all, thank you for this forum. It's VERY reassuring to read all of the posts and realize that I'm not alone with this "fluttering feeling." I've always been a nervous person and I think about things way too much. My whole life I have had these "quiet beats" where I get a fluttering feeling in my chest. For the longest time I thought my heart was racing during these episodes, but after seeing the doctor and taking my pulse I realize that it only "skips" a beat or there is sort of a quieter beat. My mom has this and my 2 year old daughter has it. (They found it when she was in the womb during a doctor visit.) We have all been checked out by our doctors and told not to worry about it. Guess what...I worry about it! My concern is that lately (since about January of 2001) these skipped beats are becoming more frequent. (Sometimes once a minute for awhile.) I have no feeling of dizziness. No pain. No other feeling whatsoever except for this fluttering feeling. Sometimes I feel it in my back near my left shoulder. Sometimes it's up front. I am a 35 year old male and I am in pretty good shape. I don't drink, smoke or take drugs. My blood pressure is usually in the 140/80 range.

My questions are...Is the increase of these things anything to be concerned about? Do I need to worry about a heart attack?(no history in my family) Can you suggest any vitamins or herbs?(I've read about Hawthorn) My wife says that she can hear a faint "clicking" sound when she listens to my chest during one of these...is that significant? Thanks again from the bottom of my heart!!

Dear piper,

Q:Is the increase of these things anything to be concerned about?
A: Probably not.  "Skipped beats" can increase or decrease in frequency depending on stress, diet, etc.  I would look at any recent changes to see if you can find a correlation.

Q: Do I need to worry about a heart attack?
A: No.  There is no correlation between skipped beats and heart attack.

Q: Can you suggest any vitamins or herbs?
A: Some people have noticed an improvement with magnesium supplements but I would discuss this first with your doctor.

Q:My wife says that she can hear a faint "clicking" sound when she listens to my chest during one of these...is that significant?
A: Mitral valve prolapse can cause a faint click but it is not generally audible without a stethoscope.

Thanks again from the bottom of my heart!! You're welcome !

I've been diagnosed with border line high blood pressure (140/60), I'm only 18. The cardiologist thought that it was a narrowing Aorta. I went for tonnes of scans, MRI's, ECGs, Captpril Renograms and they were all normal. I am overweight - about 245lbs. Even though the cardio has cleared me I still get worried about my heart and I can see my stomach moving with my heart beat 99% of the time. My heart rate is nomrmal though and it doesn't appear to be racing.

Has anyone else got anything similar or any suggestions?

Hi there,

This is my first visit to the forum.  I recently experienced a significant "fluttering" episode. I am 44, with high blood pressure and a strong family history of heart disease.  My mother experiences this fluttering while laying on her side and has complained about it for years.  She has had bypass surgery and multiple heart attacks.  I have had this feeling before, when in bed, lying on my left side.  It has occurred mostly after too much alcohol.  I am a moderate drinker, so three to four beers or two large margaritas will do it.  I recently started taking Welbutrin for depression, and have found that I can no longer tolerate more than one drink.  I am not sure if it was anxiety that caused this or the alcohol combined with the Welbutrin.  This is the first time the fluttering has occurred while on my feet. I was out shopping in the morning after having a couple of margaritas the previous night, the flutter started, and would stop when I quit walking.  It continued while walking.  I had no pain.  Needless to say, I became frightened, it became worse and I started to cry.  I was able to calm down when I got home without going to the emergency room. And since I am so bright, I had a couple of tall beers later in the week, and it happened again.  Well, finally I have concluded that I cannot drink anymore.  Nothing like being hit on the head with a frying pan to figure things out.  I will miss the beer, but will be much better off for it.

Anyway, I have not consulted a physician about this.  This is the first time I have heard reference to this fluttering phenomenon other than my mother.  Her doctors have dismissed this as being insignificant.  I would appreciate further information on this.  Thanks.

Oh yeah...I swear that it can get worse when I'm laying on my left side. Just thought I would throw that in!

Yeah, when these flutters first started getting worse I looked up different sites on the internet. It seemed whenever I read something "scary" my anxiety level would go up and so would my symptoms. I would get sweats, loose bowels, nervousness and the fluttering would get worse. It would be VERY easy to confuse these panic attacks for worsening symptoms. As soon as I started reading this board and I realized that others had this exact condition, the panic attacks went away. Now, I pretty much have that part of it under control. If you have his stuff happening to you...just relax. Even if it IS something more serious than just PVC's, it won't help to panic about it. Good luck to you!
