Giddiness after Squatting

Giddiness after Squatting

Hi,

I have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and currently, under metoprolol succinate 50 mg extended release tablets (once daily) for the past one year. Now a days, when I stand up after 5 minutes of squatting position, I feel a sudden giddiness for two to three seconds. During that time, I am looking for a support (like wall) to hold to stabilize myself. And then, during that time, my breathing goes little deep for sometime; I am losing my eye sight for two seconds and I feel a crushing feeling in my head. Is it an emergency? Should I get an immediate treatment?

What you are describing sounds like "postural hypotension", or a sudden drop in blood pressure.  Have you talked to your doctor about this? I have this problem also.  I am raising 3 grandchildren and I spend a lot of time bent over picking up toys.  When I straighten up after picking the toys up I can't function well for a short time.  You might want to do a search on postual hypotension and talk to your doctor about this.  Take care, Ally

This is a form of postural hypotension and is common in patients with HCM. It is possible for you to pass out even 5 minutes after changing positions so it is very important for you to take your time standing up and changing positions. If you are losing your eye sight than you are very close to passing out; this is called pre-syncopy and you should let your doctor know this is happening.

oh yes, a few weeks ago I had a very severe bout of it as I was getting dressed - (I know better than to stand getting dressed) I bent over and it was lights out, I hit the corner of the tiled tub and knocked myself out...severely sprained my neck

sometimes even moving my neck side to side too quickly can do it for me other times I'm ok as long as I move slowly or don't stand too quickly...I didn't know it was common with HCM patients but that makes sense...I have HOCM and Orthostatic Hypotension/Intolerance.
