HCM

Hello,
My questions are 1) Does Hypertrophic Cardiomopathy cause any abnormalities on an ECG?
2) Is this condition obvious on an echocardiogram, i.e. can it be missed?
3) Is the thickness of the left ventricular wall always measured on an echocardiogram, and if so what is the abbreviation for it on the print out? ex. LVM?
Thanks you very much

Yes it has common EKG abnormalities, usually those of increased voltage in the anterior and lateral leads. It can be missed on an echocardiogram, especially if performed by someone not used to reviewing echos of people with structural abnormalities. HCM can include not only septal hypertrophy but also mitral valve anomalies, chordal apparatus disturbances, and of course the septal enlargement and abnormal appearing LV cavity.
The septal wall and the posterior wall thicknesses are always measured on our echocardiograms. Their abbreviations are SWD and PWD.
