HOW HIGH CAN IT GO IN PANIC OR WHITE COAT

I went  to the  walk in  clinic  recently  and saw  a  doctor as I was quite  anxious .   He  took my  blood pressure  and it was  230  over  135       He  examined  my eyes  and hands,    did  SPO2  with a  finger monitor and said I should see my  Gp  the next  day.

Later on the same evening, back at home.,  it was down to 130/  85-

I  think he would normally have referred me to the hospital but I had explained that a few weeks  ago I  did have a  24  hr reading   which was  within normal, plus a normal  ECG   over 24  hrs  and additionally, I got  11.5   mets  on the exercise  test and got to  104  per cent of my  max  heart rate,  without  symptoms.

is it normal  when panicky  or having white  coat,  for the blood pressure to  go this high ?  and is  it  dangerous even in someone without known heart  disease  ?     I  do have a long standing severe  anxiety  problem

I've now been prescribed beta blocker    proponalol   and am nervous of it.   It is  80 mg per  day.   I'm  apprehensive I wont be able to walk  so fast, or put on weight,  those  sort of concerns

Should I take it and  expect to be able  to carry on as  normal ?

Thank  you in advance  for your  help

It is possible for anxiety to raise your blood pressure that much.  In my case, I have had it go that high under stress. And it was caught at the hospital the last time. As far as the beta blocker and your concerns, the best thing to do is work with your doctor. If he advises it, I would take his advice. You may have to work a bit to get to the right dose. I did.  I am taking several meds for blood pressure problems and am keeping in shape through walking every day.  I feel exercise is an important part of treating my heart disease. It keeps my weight down and gives me back the energy the meds seem to take away.  Take care, Ally

I agree with Chatty, you should work with your doctor about the beta blocker.  It sounds to me like you had a bit of a panic attack, as the 24 hour test showed you are OK.  I'd ask the doctor if you might try a small dose and work up as needed.
Beta blockers are certainly life-savers for those with heart issues, but they are effective with those that experience stress.  My cousin is a professional jazz musician who plays to very large venues Internationally, and takes one to control stage fright.  Just a bit of it calms him down.  It's a banned substance, last I read, for certain Olympic activities, such as archery, shooting, etc as it calms the nerves.  I'd discuss the doseage, ask perhaps for the lowest dose and see how it helps.
