HYPERTENSION AND EXERCISE

by ALEX W, May 28, 2000 12:00AM
i have  a few questions.
at rest my bp is about 150/90's. my pmd is aware and would like me to monitor it for about a month, he will probably start me on altace.  I have checked my bp while exercising and it goes as high as 220/100's.  I was wondering what is a normal bp during exercise, and will altace affect my exercise performance and ability.  i am a 26 y.o. who is athletic and exercises often.  i follow a healthy lifestyle and watch my diet and do not drink.
thanks.

Dear Alex,

First, the good news is that you are aware of your hypertension early so you can make changes before damage to your body occurs. A combination of bmedication and life style changes will be necessary to bring your blood pressure into control.  One of the life style changes that will help lower your BP is exercise.  It is normal for BP to rise during exercise up into the 200's with a drop in BP following exercise.  This is normal and not typically harmful.  Altace is an ACE inhibitor and unlike beta-blockers will not affect your exercise performance or ability.  Good luck to you as you work with your doctor to control your blood pressure.

I am a 36 yr old male. Due to a bad family gene, I was diagnosed with high blood pressure 10 yrs ago. My Dr tried several meds and finally settled on a beta blocker, Corgard 40mg. So for the past 10 yrs, with diet, exercise, and Corgard, I have been able to keep my blood pressure under control, all without side effects. Until 6 months ago.
I am embarrassed by this, but hopefully by posting this, someone in a similar situation will be able to offer some help. For the past 6 mons, I have been having trouble mantaining an erection. No problem getting one, but a problem keeping it. I've talked to my Dr, but short of Viagra, he says I will just have to live with it.
I have tried other blood pressure meds, and the only ones that seem to work for me are beta blockers.
Does anyone know of anything I can take or do to counteract the side effect of the med? Any herbs or anything? My wife says that this problem doesn't bother her, but I know that it must, because it sure bothers me.
  Thanks, Fred
