Had surgery for aortic stenonsis

by Dale Robbins, Sep 19, 1999 12:00AM
My name is Dale and I am 47 years old. I recently had surgery for aortic stenosis, August 25. Everything went well. The recovery experience  is inconsistent. My question is why do I feel my heart pounding at times. It feels like it's going to pound right out of my body. I had a-fib, and was re-admitted back in the hospital for a couple days. I am now on procanbid 3000 mg a day. My cardiologist says eveything is fine. I just want this pounding of my heart to go away. My surgeon says it's the heart responding to the new valve and needs time to re-adjust itself. The cardiologist says it's the scar tissue that's attached itself to the sack of the heart and I will get used to it in time. Please help to explain the reason for the pounding. Thank you so much.

Dear Dale,

We see this commonly.  Your heart has had to work extra hard against your valve for many years. It is likely thickened and stronger than the average persons heart.  Now that the valve is fixed your heart is actually beating too strong and you have this sensation.  this sensation will reduce as you are further out from surgery and as your body adjusts.
