Have you ever heard of this?????

My husband had his heart rhythum converted and after two days, he went back into A. Fib., but when he went into A.Fib, he was in misery that evening.  Pacing the floor, his entire body ached, he was restless, couldn't get comfortable in bed. He developed a fever and chills and his joints ached.
The first time this happened, the doctor said, he was probably getting the flu. We accepted that answer because it made sense. However, the symptoms left completely within 24 hours and that evening my husband went to the family doctor for an EKG only to kind out that he had gone back into A. Fib.
Then later in the month, his electrophysiologist admitted him to the hospital to try drug therapy to convert the heart rhythum.  The first two meds didn't work and the third medicine, Betapace, took him from A. Fib to A. Flutter.  The doctor released him and told him to try the betapace for 30 days.  Well, the other night, my husband was up all night again, pacing and in real discomfort and developed a fever, chills, aching joints--all classic signs of flu or 24 hour virus, yet we think he is back in full A. Fib again because of how his pulse feels. We don't see the doctor again until 03-16-99.  Have you ever heard of this happening when someone goes into A. Fib.  I know it sounds like we don't know what we are talking about, but I don't think it was the flu or a virus.  Since none of the treatments have been successful, we will more than likely be contacting the Cleveland Clinic for follow up and possible better success. We live in Pittsburgh and are willing to make the short trip to Ohio.
Thank you for such a wonderful Forum.

Dear Margaret, thank you for your question.  Your husband's symptom complex could be entirely caused by afib, but it's hard to determine that in this forum.  The symptoms of afib are variable as some patients have no idea they are in afib, and others have severe symptoms like your husband.  We offer the latest treatments for afib here at the Cleveland Clinic and one of our electrophysiologists would be happy to see your husband.  I suggest that you contact Dr. Mina Chung's office at the phone number listed below for an appointment.  Dr. Chung is an expert on afib and I think your husband would enjoy meeting her.
I hope you find this information useful.  Information provided in the heart forum is for general purposes only.  Only your physician can provide specific diagnoses and therapies. Please feel free to write back with additional questions.  Good luck!
If you would like to make an appointment at the Cleveland Clinic Heart Center, please call 1-800-CCF-CARE or inquire online by using the Heart Center website at www.ccf.org/heartcenter.   The Heart
Center website contains a directory of the cardiology staff that can be used to select the physician best suited to address your cardiac problem.
