Pulmonary hypertension means that the pressures in the pulmonary arteries are higher than normal.  Normal mean pulmonary artery pressure is less than 25 at rest and less than 30 with exercise.   The first step is to identify if the cause of pulmonary hyperetension.  Physicians separate the pulmonary hypertension into several groups.  Group I is caused by disorders that make the blood vessels in the pulmonary arteries narrow, so called pulmonary arterial hypertension.  Group II, the most likely in patients with coronary artery disease, is caused by elevated left sided pressures that back up into the lungs(in other words, the left ventricle pressure is high and leads to high lung pressures).  Group III is caused by chronic lung disease like COPD or other lung problems leading to chronically low levels of oxygen.  Group IV is caused by blood clots in the lungs, and Group V is miscelaneous.   Based on your chest xray, echo, lung tests, and other diagnostics, your physician can usually make an accurate diagnosis in terms of the category of the pulmonary hypertension.
