Heart Palpitations - 16 yr old Athlete

My son is 16 yrs. old and is very active in High School sports.  Last night after working out he had heart palpitations for nearly an hour.  I wanted to call an ambulance.   I have an appointment with a pediatric cardiologist to check things out.   This was very scary.  He's in good shape, not overweight and works out regularly.   My concern is that he just started drinking these protein shakes (recommended by the track coach).   I'm questioning whether these may have an impact on the heart rate.  Any advice is appreciated.

He might have been dehydrated after working out.  Most palpitations, esp. in someone that young are harmless, but you might want to take him to his physician just to make sure.  You didn't mention if he was actually having symptoms during this, like dizziness, passing out etc.  That needs to be investigated.  I assume he had a physician clearance to play high school sports.  I would also VERY carefully read the label on the protein shakes.  If there is no label, throw them out.  If Ephedrine is in them, throw them out and notify the athletic director.  You might consider taking them to the physician when you see them.  Good luck, and I promise it will be ok.

Thank you for your posting.  I did schedule an appointment with the doctor.  He was cleared for sports by his physician.   I'm just really concerned about the intake of these protein shakes.  I do intend to take one with to the doctor's office.   Thanks again!
