Heart-Post Exercise Discomfort

by Goatman, Jul 05, 2007 12:00AM
I am a non-smoking, 60 yer old male in reletively good physical condition with a long history of moderate exercise and good eating habits.

I have had a history of
-a very slow heartbeat....resting in the 50's but elevates to 130 plus on the treadmil.  Had an ECG with following write-up....."marked sinus bradycardia"
-minor chest discomforts not in any one location.  Mutliple tests with negative results.  Can only attribute to muscular-skeletal
-minor heart arrythmias that last but a few seconds and come and go over no apparent reason.  Most reason test indicate..."borderline enlarged left ventricular size with normal LV systolic function// EF greater than 70%//Mild mitral regurgitation and tricuspid regurgitation.  Presently taking 100 mg's or Tambocor dailey with some improvement

I am currently in training for a half marathon.  I checked with my heart doctor before starting my training porgram...and given the "go ahead".

Question...I have recently noticed some slight chest discomfort more in the sternum area and a generally sense of "not feeling quite right" an hour or two after running 3-5+ miles.  I have no discomfort or uneasy feelings when running; fact is I feel quite envigorated.

Question....should I be concerned?

Although your risk for coronary artery disease is mitigated by the fact that you are a a nonsmoker, are relatively young and have good exercise habits, the fact you are having some discomfort in the chest with active exercise should probably propmt an exercise stress test to exclude coronary atherosclerosis.  Given your very good exercise capacity I would suggest that you perform an exercise type of a stress test as opposed to a pharmacologic stress test as this gives us more information regarding prognosis and risk.  Cardiologists generally encourage an active lifestyle, and aerobic activity but  generally view a marathon as a fairly stressful activity from a cardiovascular standpoint and we don't jelly recommended to people in your age group.
