Heart dimensions

I have mitral valve prolapse. Are there certain chamber dimensions that need to be closely monitored?

The upper left chamber (atrium) can/will enlarge due to an increase in blood volume (back flow of blood from the lower chamber).  The left ventricle could also enlarge if the blood supply into circulation is decreased due to blood back flowing into the upper chamber with each heartbeat and this decrease of blood volume pumped into circulation with each heartbeat can stress the heart with the additional work to meet the blood/oxygen demand.  That would be the worst case scenario.

Thank you for the question, and if you have any further questions or comments you are welcome to respond.  Tkae care,

Ken
