Heart stent and diabetes and emphysema

by foxylady, Jul 19, 2005 12:00AM
My husband, 56, 100 pounds overweight, had a heart attack 6 months ago.  Angioplasty, LAD was 80% blocked before stent, OMB & RCA are 60-70% blocked.  Diabetes is uncontrolled with meds, averages 200-300.  Cholesterol and blood pressure pretty good due to meds.  Triglycerides are high.  Just diagnosed with acute emphysema. Family history of heart failure and heart disease.  I am trying to figure out how the diabetes and emphysema is affecting his heart.  He will not quit smoking (pack to pack and half a day), won't watch his diet, and basically denying that there is any problems.  When they did the stent they noted Apical hypokinesis.  I have not been able to find much about what that means.  As you may figure out, I am at a loss as to what I can do.I know if he won't do anything he may not live to be 60 but I am trying to understand is what I may expect.  I am worried about a massive heart attack.  Any information would be helpful.  Thank you.

fl,

thanks for the post.

You husband needs to take control of his life and risk factors including cholesterol, weight, diabetes, and tobacco abuse.  All of these are intertwined and greatly increase his risk for heart disease and complications. The emphesema may make it difficult for him to exercise.

The smoking will only worsen his emphysema.

You should try to see if he would be agreeable to a cardiac rehabilitation program and visit with a cardiologist to discuss some type of program to decrease his risk. He is on a course for more complications from his disease.

good luck

Thanks for the response.  My husband has been to a cardio rehab class.  Lies to the instructor nurse about exercising and all.  He is not going to change.  I am trying to understand how all of this is affecting his heart, how much damage it is doing.  I figure the more information I have the better it is for me to understand and really just prepare for what is happening to him.

Diet, exercise and pills alone cannot clean up your arteries. You owe it yourself and your loved ones. Act now! Give a gift of life today!

Do you know someone with heart disease? Heart disease they say, is a silent killer. Its victims know not the day nor the hour. Their living us is most times sudden. Not enough time to give a goodbye kiss, or a goodbye hug. Act now and save your life or the life of a loved one.
