Heart virus

by Peter, Nov 30, 1999 12:00AM
I know of a 14 year-old who died this summer due to a heart virus. I was told the virus resulted in brain swelling which was the ultimate cause of death. I have not been able to find information on this on the web. You insight is appreciated.

Viruses may cause a cardiomyopathy or a disease of the muscle of the wall.  These same viruses may cause encephalitis.

Typically these are Coxsackie viruses and not the typical virus that causes the flu.

If encephalitis is not involved, can cardiomyopathy result in brain swelling?

Typically this would be encephalitis.  Brain swelling will not occur with heart problems alone.
