Help Needed re PVC's

Hi everyone,

Im just wondering if anyone out there could help me out.

Today I had an ECG in hospital to check my irregular heartbeats. They started on Saturday and I still have them as I write this (Wed afternoon). I have been told that the results will be sent to my GP in about a week but I cant get my mind off them so thats why I am here.

It all started on Friday night. Myself and my girlfriend had returned from a 4 month trip away and so welcome home parties had been arranged by all our friends. We had only drank 4/5 drinks on maybe 5 occasions over the 4 month trip but on Friday I went ridiculously over board. The party was in my friends house and I was DJing at it.....and because of this I didnt realise how much I was drinking nor how drunk I was. I ended up consuming about 600ml of vodka between 9pm and 3am. I hadnt eaten much that day and was violently sick between 3am and 5am. I was also dry wreching due to the lack of food/fluid in my system. The following day, my throat and chest were quite sore from all the vomitting and I also felt fairly sick all day. Myself and my girlfriend had arranged to meet friends on the Sat night also, all of which was planned about 2 months in advance. I didnt feel up to drinking again and also, I thought I felt one or 2 irregular heartbeats during the day. Foolishly though, I went along to keep my friends happy. I didnt go overboard but i didnt drink about 5 pints of beer.

The following day (Sunday), my heart-beat didnt feel right at all. I had random strong beats that I could really feel through my chest. This continued all day and on Sunday evening I was unable to sleep. I spent nearly 3 hours awake with the strong beats. I eventually fell asleep and the following day, it still hadnt really gone away. That evening (Monday), without telling my girlfriend why, I asked her to listen to my heartbeat. After about 30 secs she looked at me and said 'what is that?!' After my Mam and Dad also confirmed that it didnt sound right, I went to see my GP on Tuesday evening. She had a listen and referred me for an ECG.

Which brings me to today. This morning I had my ECG. Straight away it was confirmed that numerous PVCs were occuring in my heartbeat. I was told that I may have to wear a monitor for 24 hours at some stage but that they do reckon it was caused by the drink, although they cant confim as of yet.

The PVCs have still been occuring all day  since the ECG this morning and I am quite worried. I am 21 year old male. I have played football (soccer) at a very high level since I was 6 and was a semi-pro just 2 years ago. Up to the holiday, I trained at least 3 times a week, and on the last 3 weeks of the holiday I went on a 4km run 4 times a week without any problems. I have never had any other health problems before this. From the bit of research I have done, I know that alcohol can cause PVCs, but I am worried because of how long I have had them now. It has now been 4 days and they havent changed. I know I was stupid to drink that much alcohol, and Im sure it has damaged my system. But I am really worried that I may have done some permanent damage.

So Im wondering if anyone out there can relate to me or even share any knowledge they have with me. How long can PVCs last? Can alcohol do permanent damage to your heart? Does it sound like something is seriously wrong with me?

I really appreciate any repsonse you can give me. I know this post is very long winded but I am just really worried and am looking for some peace of mind if possible.

Thanks in advance,

PC

hey bud im just like you i have PAC's alot at night, they are triggered by my anxiety, and right now im drunk and short breath and PAC's its really annoying but dont let it get to you, its not going to hurt you get a holter monitor and check up every few months and you will be good to go...

every night i do very hard work outs (im a boxer) and i lift just before bed, this REALLY helps my PACs go away, and gets my mind off them....so your best bet is to yes, start football sweat out all that **** and dont worry, stay physically active you will find yourself much less worried

i have PACs and im in better shape then all my friends so no limits their.

Some people have thousands a day, every day. For other people they come and go in a totally unpredictable way with no reason. Many people find they start suddenly one day, completely out of the blue. Rarely are they the result of actual damage to the heart. I think you've just knocked your body out of whack with that mega drinking session and they will probably settle down for you soon. The only thing I can say for sure is that they are horrible and the bane of many people's lives. Check out the heart rhythm forum where there are loads of people plagued by pvcs.  There is a thing called 'holiday heart' which basically means arrhythmias brought on by alcohol overindulgence. It's temporary but you probably just have a longer lasting case of this.

Thanks a lot for getting back to me. So for some people do they just happen 24/7? Or do you think that they will eventually fade away until the next time I drink? Im off the drink now myself, I dont fancy having numerous sleepless nights for the sake of a few drinks.

PVC's can occur in a normal heart. They're annoying and even uncomfortable at times. I don't know if the drinking triggered it or not. I don't drink because it does trigger arrhythmias in me and it's not worth it. You may have to wait till you get the results from the monitor. Sorry I can't tell you more than that. If someone knew how to stop them, they'd be a millionaire. You'll see dozens of people on this board and the rhythm board that are disgusted with having PVC's. But there's no magic bullet.
