Hemodynamics

Hello Doctors, thank you for all the wonderful work you do here at CCF.  My question is: what are the hemodynamics that affect how much a valve does or doesn't regurgitate?  Happy Thanksgiving!

The primary determinant is the structure of the valve. Beyond that, elevated blood pressure is the primary hemodynamic abnormality that can increase regurgitation. Happy Thanksgiving to you also.

Blood follows the path of least resistance. If the heart has to pump against a high blood pressure, it would rather just pump backwards across a leaky valve - this can increase the amount of regurgitation.
