High Blood Pressure but Low Pulse Rate

High Blood Pressure but Low Pulse Rate

I have high blood presure and am on 3 meds (I sometimes forget to take them).
Anway the earlier today I was not feeling good; massive headache, stiff neck & soar eyes).
I thougth i might have a migrain. I get them once in a blue moon (thank goodness maybe once or twice a year).
I threw up and If I have a migrain, I usually feel a lot better but I did not.
I went to the local drug store to test my BP and is was very high. 245/135 but my pluse rate was only 63.
I am overweight. 53 years old, not a anthlete by any means.
I have for the past year been walking in the mornings about 4 miles / 1 mile of that up the escarpment; but that is about it.
I have in the past, through meditation, I have been able to bring my heartbeat down to the high 50's .
I am just surprized with a blood pressre that high that my pulse rate would be that low.
Does this mean anything other than I need to see my doctor.
I have had this happen a couple of times before and when I see the doctor I get the feeling he does not believe me. That I am making it up.

I believe you and I hope your doctor will also. I do have low pulse around 60 or lower (40-50)sometimes and very high blood pressure if not treated, most it is under control.

Yes you should go to the doctor, also you can do a lot to lower your numbers, first of all EXERCISE! Being overweight is a killer. But you know that. Keep walking!! Watch what you eat!

Good luck!

A lot of people confuse heart rate and blood pressure, believing the speed of the heart regulates the pressure. i.e., the faster the heart beats, the higher the pressure will be. This is not the case. For example, If I exercise and get my heart rate to 180-190, you should expect to see my blood pressure get so high that it will burst all my arteries, but of course this doesn't happen. The kidneys help maintain pressure by regulating the amount of available fluid. The arteries also can tighten or relax, restricting flow or allowing more flow. The heart too can adapt in two ways, it can pump harder or faster or both.
You need to get your blood pressure under control because it can strain the heart and damage the arteries.

Hello and hope you are doing well.

Certain medications like beta blockers which are used to treat hypertension can lower the pulse rate. The low pulse rate could be the side effect of the medications. Discuss your symptoms with your consulting doctor he may change the dose or the medications.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
