High Cholesterol

by Chris__0__0, Jan 05, 1999 12:00AM

I am 38 years old and have had high Cholesterol since my 20's. (unmedicated it is as high as 360.  I realize  that it increases when you are pregnant and going off the medication coupled with this I wonder what my risk is.  I do not have any other known health problems, but have strong family history of heart disae and chronic vascular disease.  I have had one successsful pregnancy and one miscarriage recently.  My ob-gyn seems underconcerned.  Most studuies are done on men and i MA VERY CONCERNED AS TO THE risk while I ma pregnant.   Thank you

Dear Chris,
Thank you for your question.  I believe your concern is two-fold. First what is the risk of heart disease progressing during pregnancy while you are off the medication and second what is the risk to the baby.  To answer the second part first there is no risk to the fetus to have a elevated cholesterol and it will in no way determine his/her cholesterol or risk of heart disease.  As for you the progression of heart blockages is very slow taking many years.  Nine or so months off the medication will not increase the progression of  any plaque buildup significantly.
I hope you find this information useful.  Information provided in the heart forum is for general purposes only.  Only your physician can provide specific diagnoses and therapies.  Please feel free to write back with additional questions.
