High blood pressure due to anxiety?

by mom4cem, Mar 15, 2005 12:00AM
Good Morning Dr:

Female 39yr old. Have been experiencing episodes of heart rate increasing then staying high along with head feeling full/pressure. Recently went to walk in after a few hours of off and on feeling like this. B/P 160/90 and pulse 120,,after 20 min. they retook and b/p 130/80 and pulse 88. I have been checked with echo/echo~stress test, ekg and routinely are checked every 3mths due to palpitations by cardio. Wore 24hr as well as event monitor. Even during last episode, recorded event, though they said there was much artificat but they could get a pulse reading etc., and Dr. said it points to anxiety.

I normally run normal to low. During  these episodes I can feel that my b/p is high and pulse is racing, have chills/shivers and sweating. I even have this sweating and chills during the day. I am worried about it lasting for a few hours, up and down and about the almost daily occurence lately. B/p will be normal in-between. Take 12.5 mg. of tenormin for palpitations, no other meds. I have had issues with anxiety/panic in the past.

Any input is appreciated.

Hi mom4cem,

I know we say this a lot but without seeing the actual studies it is touch to interpret.

Have you tried an medications for anxiety like paxil, prozac, zoloft, etc?  That is probably what I would try first, although your cardiologist may not want to prescribe and manage these medications.

Based on what you write in your first paragraph, it sounds consistent with anxiety.  Typically re entrant rhythms are faster than 120, although it could be something like atrial fibrillation -- but they would pick that up on Holter.

My approach would be treat for anxiety first and see if that helps.

Good luck.
