Is 17 as a level of homocysteine considered too high for a 44 year old female, cardiac patient? What can be done to lower it?

Dear Roussseau,
Let me begin by telling you that there really is no consensus on what are normal values
let alone what values are acceptable in a "cardiac patient."  A level of 17 in the plasma
(not serum), in the fasting state is probably in the upper limits of  normal, as you can see there are
many variables involved: as well there is no agreement among researchers in terms of homocysteine as a cardiac risk factor.  It would be a good idea to have your physician
discuss the results of your test with you.  There is discussion on many fronts about the
potential benefits of folate supplementation, this is a vitamin.  As this forum is for general
medical informational purposes only diagnosis and treatment can only be made by your physician(s).  Regardless, a multivitamin once a day is generally a good idea for every
one.  As new information is always coming out on this subject, keep inquiring.
