How long to push or pull

by JoAnn15, Aug 12, 2008 08:46PM
I had aortic valve replacement with one bypass using the mammary artery. The surgeon said I can drive (4 weeks post op) but at the same time said I cannot push myself to a seated position while getting out of bed until between 6 to 8 weeks. This was particularly frustrating to me as I need to ask my children or granddaughter to help me at night.
I asked if they confirmed healing of the sternum with x ray but they said they just know it takes from 6 to 8 weeks.
Then I wonder which it is 6,7 or 8 weeks and how will I know? My children will still not let me drive at 5 weeks since we have air bags in the car. I am 66 and didn't even realize I had a problem until my internist told me my murmur was louder and I needed an echocardiogram, then on to a cardiac cath and then the open heart surgery. It was like a whirlwind. So does anyone have insight as to 6-7 or 8 weeks. Outside incision is healing well. Getting around ok and going shopping. Just get a little tired. I only use Tylenol for pain in the daytime and a mild pain med to sleep at night.
