Husband fainted

by Sandra Williams, Oct 17, 1999 12:00AM
My husband (52 years old) with a history of HBP and angioplasty with stent (condition discovered after exertion caused chest pain)--yesterday, he lifted a very heavy garage door and experienced intense pain in the lower back; he took about 4 steps, leaned onto the side of the car, his eyes became glassy and he fell sideways into the yard; he was out for a period of approximately 15 seconds during which time his shoulders were twitching, he was clammy, sweaty to the touch and his color was pale.  He refused to go the ER, says that he never experienced any chest pain, that the pain was entirely focused in his lower back.  He has tenderness in the lower back now and is walking with a noticeable limp and his unable to bend.  Should I worry that this is cardiac related or should I just leave it alone as back pain?  I think because he briefly lost consciousness, he needs to be checked out by his doctor?

I would agree that your husband requires medical attention.  It is unlikely that he passed out due to cardiac causes and sounds like he passed out with straining or severe pain in his back.  He may have ruptured a disc in his lumbar spine.
