Hypertension After Heart Valve Surgery

January 8 I had my aortic valve replaced (tissue), the aorta repaired and a hole in my heart patched.  I have had hypertension for nearly 30 years.  Before the surgery I was taking Procardia XL 60mg and ToprolXL 50mg.  My pressure was pretty much under control with an occasional higher reading.  While I was in the hospital I had two episodes of atrial fibrillation lasting 24-48 hours with a heart rate up to 140.  I was hospitalized twice more for this during the month of January.  I was sent home with many new medications including different hypertension meds.  I am taking Metoprolol 50mg twice a day (one at breakfast, one at dinnertime).  In early February the surgeon added 5mg of Norvasc.  When I had a followup visit with my cardiologist, he took me off Norvasc, said he did not like Procardia, and put me on 80mg of Diovan.  My blood pressure gradually increased with most readings ranging between 150/88 to l70/88.  Earlier this week the cardiologist increased the Diovan to 160mg (I take the Diovan at bedtime).  Each day since the Diovan was increased so has my blood pressure readings - today an average of 191/102.  I also am taking Amiodarone 50mg, Coumadin 5mg, Lovastatin 40mg, Iron, a vitamin, Potassium, 81mg aspirin.  My heart rate is usually in the low 50's.  Several years ago I went through a time when my blood pressure was extremely high.  I could no longer take diuretics and many drugs were tried before finding one that worked.  Can you give me any suggestions?  Are extended release medications less effective?  Why would ProcardiaXL not be a good choice since it worked before?
