Hypertenstion 26 year-old Male Coreg CR

I'm a 26 year-old male. A week ago I had an episode of high blood pressure (180/110) and palpitations. I called my doctor the next day and he prescribed me  Lotrel (5/20mg). My BP came down to ~120/90. I stopped taking the Lotrel after the first day, BP shot up to 170/122, went to emergency.

Saw my doctor yesterday, he checked blood and urine work (all clean), did EKG and said I have a fast heart rate (~90-95bpm) and hypertension. He prescribed me Coreg CR 80mg.

Is the Coreg CR necessary? I'm afraid that such a high dose would drop my heart rate down too low.

thank you.

You are not giving the drugs time to work...neither will work immediately...  Normally one does not start beta blockers based on one high blood pressure reading.  There is something missing here?

The episode of high BP and palpitations was on Tuesday, Wednesday all day without medication my BP was ~150/100. After taking the Lotrel (a few hours) my BP was almost perfect. Thursday, I was fine all day, BP was average, Friday, it shot up to 170/122. That's when I went to the ER. They told me to talk to my doctor about hypertension and palpitations.Monday my doctor ran an EKG and prescribed my Coreg CR 80mg stating it would also help bring my heart rate down (average is 85-95bpm).

Why do you stop taking the meds?

What I think you need to do:

1. Always do as your doctor tell you to do regarding meds. It's possible your blood pressure is elevated due to stress and anxiety, and if you can't tolerate a high dosage of blood pressure meds, keep in touch with your doctor and get the dosage adjusted, but never stop without asking him first.

2. A blood pressure of 170/122 is for a young man highly uncommon. Extreme stress can of course bring your blood pressure to high levels, but you need to be examined for so-called secondary hypertension; that your elevated blood pressure has a cause, like narrow kidney arteries, excess adrenaline or other hormonal diseases.

3. Ask your doctor for a 24 hour BP measuring. BP measured at the emergency room or by yourself in settings of extreme anxiety are NOT representable for your normal BP.
