Hypothyroidism and palpitations

My father has undergone bypass surgery 12 years ago.  Most recently, he is being treated for cancer of the small intestine and is receiving chemotherapy (first 5FU, now Irinotecan).  After receiving chemotherapy for  approximately 6 months, lab tests revealed a TSH level of 39.  He was placed on a thyroid replacment medication.  However, my father complained that the medication caused him to have burning in the chest area and exhaustion even when trying to walk across the room.  He does not feel that he has a problem with his thyroid gland (I have advised him that the new onset "hypothyroidism" is most likely a result of his chemotherapy).  He recently discontinued the thyroid medication.  I don't think this was a wise move.  I had read that untreated hypothyroidism can cause myocardial infarction and arrhythmias.  What would you suggest I tell him that would convince him that taking the thyroid supplement is necessary?
