I have abnormal heartbeats before sleeping please help!

Sometimes I have a very irregular heartbeat.  It is very apparent, very discomforting and very scary.  Most times it happens soon after I lay down to sleep.  Sometimes I could trigger it by laying in a certain position(on my left side) and then sometimes not. Sometimes its completely random usually happening at night while I am laying down, but has happens while I am up and about. Sometimes cases only happen a few times a week, then other times it would happen every day.  After heavier cases I have a slight ache in my chest 3/10.  I have been dealing with this since I joined the military (~3 yrs).  I havent had a formal answer on whats happening from any doctor.  One doctor said the ekg said read "muscle twitching"? huh? I exercise ~5 times a week, 24 Male. PLEASE HELP! THANKS IN ADVANCE
Sincerely Lee

There are a number of irregular rhythms that can occur spontaneously throughout the day. Some are completely benign and some might warrant further evaluation. After a good history and physical examination, an EKG is the first test that is used to evaluate such symptoms.  However, this will only be helpful if you are having those irregular heartbeats at that moment. Another test that is commonly used is a Holter monitor which is basically a recorded EKG over a period of 1-3 days. The information is then downloaded and evaluated for evidence of any irregularities -- and has the advantage of catching symptoms that occur only sporadically. This is also very helpful if you are having symptoms, which can be correlated to any irregularities caught on the recording strip.  If you are having any symptoms such as light-headedness, shortness of breath, of fainting, you should have yourself seen formally by a physician who can order further tests.
