Implications/life style chnge - HEART MURMER ?

by A. Boswell, Dec 20, 1999 12:00AM
During a routine physical, a 'heart murmer' was detected.
Would strenuous exercise tend to exacerbate the condition?

by Cleveland Clinic, MD, Dec 20, 1999 12:00AM
Exercise may increase the intensity of some murmurs due to the increase blood flow but in general exercise does not change the underlying condition which causes the murmur.  Oftentimes a echocardiogram will be obtained to determine the cause of the murmur.

1.Will weight lifting make the valve or regurg. worse in patients w/ milod mvp?
2.What is the difference between a heart murmur and mvp, or is there a difference?
3.I was also wondering, I take birth control (ortho tri-cyclen) and  I am a 19 year old non-smoker.  I was just wondering since I have MVP - does the combination of mvp and birth control increase chances of a stroke, etc.?

In general any type of activity is OK as long as it is approved by your doctor.  MVP is mitral valve prolapse and may or may not be associated with a murmur which is 'backwards' flow of blood across the valve.  There is no increased risk of stroke with MVP.
